Katarina Wit began skating at five. Her talent soon were evident and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. This was where she was introduced to her coach Jutta Muller. Witt placed second in the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. Her debut was a huge success. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female silver medal for figure skating in an intense contest. After four years, that she was able to claim an additional competitive race. The free skater lost, but she won the gold medal for her mandatory figures and the short program. Witt is the only time a repeat woman to win the women's figure skating since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in the world of film and television acting, then returned to figure skating to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she did not win the gold medal, she was a hit with the spectators. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
